A beautiful 1940s Rose brooch from Norseland, a registered trademark of CoroCraft. During WWII, not only did 70% of Coro's jewelry plants convert to military production, but those facilities continuing to produce jewelry were forced to switch from gold plate and rhodium to sterling silver. In "American Costume Jewelry: Art & Industry, 1935-1950,"(pg. 88) this conversion is described:
"On 1st July 1942, the company presented with much fanfare its first sterling silver collection, declaring itself to be the first company to accept the challenge of using non-priority metals in order to conform to Government rules. Therefore, the first line made entirely of sterling silver dates back to the fall of 1942, although a few cheap sterling lines with flower and animal subjects had already been produced back in Spring, possibly to test the reactions of the public.
