Katherine Dominguez's relationship with Victor is floundering because of his reliance on social media and virtual reality to maintain their relationship. She discovers social media inhibits deep personal relationships when she travels from a time of high technology, failing climate, and spreading diseases to 14th Century England, a time of low technology and poor medical knowledge.
