Video Link -https://www.instagram.com/charliesopals/reel/DPDnYBkCBpA/ This stunning Ethiopian opal has been cut and polished to a very high standard, and is now ready to be set in either a ring, a pendant, or just to admire as a beautiful keep sake. This piece has a mixture of two patterns. The ‘Moss’ pattern is the rich and prominent on the reverse of this stone. There is a fraction of the rare ‘Mackerel’ pattern evident on the side of the face of this stunning gemstone. Opal is best viewed in bright sunlight, or bright artificial light. The light/torch on a phone is also very good, and can reveal colour that you never thought was there without a substantially brighter light.(opal needs lots of light to diffract) The most sought-after pattern is honeycomb, a pattern exclusive to Ethiopian opal. Unlike Australian opal that forms deep underground, Ethiopian opal forms high up in the mountains, and volcanic activity is behind these hydrophane opals formations. One distinguishing feature is that most Ethiopian opals are ‘hydrophane’ meaning their porous surfaces absorb water like a sponge, shifting their appearance, size, and stability when submerged.
