Traveling Man Treasures is selling this Pre-Columbian mold-made terracotta head from the Veracruz culture discovered in the Gulf Coast region of Mexico. The fact that it is "mold made" dates it to the later classic period (approx 800-1300 CE). The head is in excellent condition for its age, with appropriate weathering and minor cracks; however, the piece is sturdy and structurally sound.
The hollow-molded terracotta pottery fragment comes from a classic "sonriente" or smiling face figure; with an expressive, cheerful demeanor, a quality most recognized as a Veracruz culture staple. The piece is characterized by softly rounded cheeks, wide eyes, and an open-mouth with prominent teeth. The neck flares out where it would have been attached to a now-missing body, suggesting it once belonged to a full-standing figure. Crowned with an elaborate headdress featuring a molded image of a birdlike creature - rendered in profile within a rectangular cartouche.
