He was a native Irish speaker and had a phD in Celtic Studies from Harvard. He was a member of the Aosdána, 'people of the arts') is an Irish association or academy of artists, each of whom must have produced a distinguished body of work of genuine originality. It can only have 250 living members at a time. The Desmond O’Grady International Poetry Competition is named after him. This collection of poetry is in English, with a scattering of Irish words.
