As a child in Germany, Berta Hummel was talented to sketch and draw folklore-like pastoral drawings of children in their daily life activities. The Goebel Company purchased the rights to Berta’s drawings and began producing figurines in 1935. They quickly became popular and highly collectible. These charming little figurines, with a nostalgic appeal, found a special place in the heart of collectors. Artist Berta Hummel went to Convent to become a Nun and became Maria Innocentia Hummel. M I Hummel is marked on each figurine along with symbols on the bottom, which identify the range of years in which it was produced. They are hand painted, and have the painter’s signature on the bottom.
