Condition: Good antique condition with natural patina to the zitan wood, intact boxwood inlays, no cracks or restorations. The lid is currently stuck closed due to age-related wood expansion.

This elegant rectangular lidded box is a fine example of late 19th–early 20th-century Chinese folk craftsmanship, crafted from zitan (purple sandalwood)—a dense, ebony-like wood prized for its deep, lustrous black hue. The lid and sides are inlaid with panels of boxwood, which have been delicately carved incised relief to depict scenes of scholars and courtly figures in a landscape setting.
