Questi oggetti venivano portati in tasca o al collo per annusare essenze profumate, sia per piacere personale sia per proteggersi dai cattivi odori e, secondo le credenze dell’epoca, dalle malattie. Le vinaigrette erano molto diffuse nell’Inghilterra e nell’Europa dell’età georgiana e vittoriana; numerosi esempi analoghi sono conservati in musei internazionali come il Victoria and Albert Museum di Londra.
