The softly modelled features, downcast gaze, and restrained tonal palette reflect Burne-Jones’ approach to feminine allegorical subjects during the early 1880s. The image bears the printed plate inscription “EBJ 1882 to JCC” in the lower corner, referencing the original drawing date and dedication, a format commonly reproduced on authorised Burne-Jones studio and publisher prints of the period. This image is commonly referred to in reference sources as a study associated with King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid, reflecting its stylistic relationship to the female figure type Burne-Jones developed during this phase of his career. Rather than a direct preparatory sketch for the finished painting, it represents a standalone head study connected to the same period and idealised figure language seen across several of his major works. Produced using a high-quality late 19th-century printing process such as photogravure or collotype.
