Marie Antoinette Exhibition Supervised by the Palace of Versailles: The Truth of the French Queen as Told by Artworks
Catalog
Mori Arts Center Gallery
2016 - 2017
Exhibition Overview:
Originally built as a "hunting lodge" by Louis XIII, the Palace of Versailles became a symbol of the French absolute monarchy when Louis XIV moved the court and government functions there in 1682.
After marrying the Dauphin of France (later Louis XVI) in 1770, Marie Antoinette spent approximately 20 years here until the French Revolution. The Palace of Versailles can be said to be a "treasure chest of memories" for Marie Antoinette, where she spent the most glorious years of her life.
This exhibition, planned and supervised by the Palace of Versailles for the first time in Japan, displays over 200 items, including paintings that evoke the glamorous court life, tableware and furniture that Marie Antoinette used at the Palace of Versailles, and clothing she wore during the revolutionary period. Furthermore, the queen's private space within the palace, the "Petit Appartement," is reproduced in its original size. This is a comprehensive Marie Antoinette exhibition that explores her turbulent life through three contents.
