Tsutomu Nihei
Born in Fukushima Prefecture in 1971. He studied architecture in high school and, after graduating, worked as a site supervisor before living in New York for a year. After returning to Japan, he began drawing manga in earnest, and in 1995, "BLAME" won the Jiro Taniguchi Special Prize at the Afternoon Four Seasons Award. After working as an assistant to Tsutomu Takahashi, he began serializing "BLAME!" in Monthly Afternoon (Kodansha) from 1997. His style, which features extremely few lines of dialogue and a hard-boiled drawing style with a focus on backgrounds, gained popularity. From 2009 to 2016, he serialized "Knights of Sidonia" in Monthly Afternoon. In 2015, "Knights of Sidonia" won the Kodansha Manga Award. The work was also made into a TV anime. From 2017, he has been serializing "Ningyo no Kuni" (Country of Dolls) in Monthly Shonen Sirius.
