From The Bookman, Volume 5, 1897: "As in Sudermann's 'Magda,' the irrepressible conflict between a woman of the world and her narrowminded neighbors among whom she returns to live is one of the main themes. Mrs. Cabot however does not make her denouement tragic but in her crisp and gently satirical treatment of these people suggests Mrs Craigie and in her witty dialogue reminds one of Anthony Hope Hawkins. She pictures the people of Brookfield as descendants from the Pilgrims in a very literal and scarcely flattering sense of the word." Handsome tan cloth with two color decorated cover.
