Designer Phillip Lim was born in Orange County, California, USA in 1973 to a Chinese-American family. He studied finance at California State University. Not passionate about finance, he worked as a design assistant intern under Katiyon Adeli. After that, he worked as a head designer for the Los Angeles-based brand "development."
In 2005, he moved to New York to launch his own collection. He established the brand with Wen Zhou as his partner. He debuted at the 2006 Fall/Winter New York Collection, presenting the collection under the brand name "3.1 Phillip Lim." The "3.1" in "3.1 Phillip Lim" comes from his age when he established the brand.
